The 2014 Beijing Modern Music Festival (BMMF) hosted one of the best Polish string quartets - Apollon Musagète. The ensemble performed music pieces by Polish composers in the Conert Hall of the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing. The project marked the fifth year of successful collaboration between the CCOM and Culture.pl.
Chinese audiences had opportunity to listen to the quartet's interpretation of Andrzej Panufnik's String Quartet No. 2 Messages, and String Quartet No. 3 Wycinanki (Paper Cuts), Henryk Mikołaj Górecki's String Quartet No. 1 Dusk Is Already Falling and Wacław of Szamotuły's Modlitwa, gdy dziatki spać idą (Prayer Upon Children Going To Bed) or Już się zmierzka.
Apollon Musagète Quartett is considered to be one of the world's best string quartets. The ensemble, formed by four Polish artists in Vienna in 2006, performs in the biggest concert halls such as Carnegie Hall in New York, Berlin Philharmonic, Gewandhaus in Leipzig, Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Herkulessaal and Gasteig in Munich, Konzerthaus and Musikverein in Vienna, Wigmore Hall in London, Tonhall in Zurich, and the Louvre Museum in Paris. The quartet is also a regular guest of prestigious festivals, like Schleswig Holstein Musikfestival in Vienna, Leipzig Bach Fest, Schwetzinger Festpiele, Schubertiade Schwarzenberg, Rheingau Festival, and Luzerner Festival.
The first edition of the Apollon Musagète Festival in Goslar, under the artistic patronage of the Polish quartet, took place in 2008. Among the participating musicians were members of the famous Alban Berg Quartet, which has collaborated and performed pieces for string and orchestra with many acclaimed orchestras such as the BBC Symphonic Orchestra, Dresdner Philharmoniker, Wrocławska Orkiestra Kameralna Leopoldinum, Dohnanyi Budafok Orchestra from Budapest, and Heidelberger Philharmoniker.
Along with their exceptional artistic activity, Apollon Musagète Quartett undertakes many initiatives to promote Polish chamber music and foster collaboration with modern composers. The repertoire of the quartet consists of classical music pieces, as well as compositions dedicated to Apollo, the guide of the muses (Musagète).
The quartet welcomes collaborative projects from artists creating different styles of music. It has recorded with vocalist and pianist Tori Amos. Their album, Night of Hunters, reached first position of Billboard classical music chart, as well as a high ranking in two other categories (rock music and alternative music).
In 2014, Apollon Musagète Quartett won a Polityka's Passport award, as well as the British Borletti-Buitoni Trust Award.
