WAW Magazine / Edgar Bąk / published by Uptown Foundation, Nowy Theatre / illustrated by Edgar Bąk
WAW was intended as a local, Warsaw-based magazine about culture. After establishing its thematic scope and form of publication, the editors-in-chief acknowledged the role of the graphic designer as integral in the magazine’s overall creation. Edgar Bąk became responsible for the layout.
WAW’s characteristic heading script was specially created for the magazine. It was based on a watchmaker’s neon sign on a Warsaw street. It is one of the Warsaw typefaces of the vernacular trend in typography, rising directly from the city and its visual culture. The second distinguishing element of WAW lies in its characteristic, spaced-out leads reminiscent of the crooked typography of old road signs. An interesting, non-obvious, intelligent design has been achieved which doesn’t flatter the reader.
