Chinese Publication on The History of Polish Art
The book The History of Polish Art, written specifically for the Chinese market, was released by Shanghai Joint Publishing Company. This is the first such extensive study on the topic published in China. The publication was created in cooperation with the Adam Mickiewicz Institute.
The idea of the publication was conceived as a result of the exhibition Treasures from Chopin's Country: Polish Art from the 15th – 20th Century, which was held in 2015 at the National Museum of China in Beijing. The book is expected to fill an important gap in the promotion of Polish culture, since publications on Polish art and material culture were so far lacking in the Chinese market.
The book consists of a collection of essays prepared by the Polish Institute of World Art Studies and edited by art historian Professor Jerzy Malinowski. Each chapter was authored by outstanding specialists in the field, professors of art history of Poland’s most important universities, who focus on architecture, painting and sculpture. The publication is designed to be used as an art history textbook. Therefore, it is a cross-sectional study of the art of Polish lands, covering the most important periods and styles from prehistoric to modern times. For the convenience of the Chinese readers, a concept different from traditionally applied in Polish publications in the field was adopted. Instead of describing particular styles and artistic attitudes (from romanism to postmodernism and contemporary art trends), the content was classified according to ruling dynasties (Piast, Jagiellonian, Vasa, Wettin) and later political periods, bringing the concept of the publication closer to the traditions of the Chinese art history.
The History of Polish Art is the second book authored by Polish art historians and translated into Chinese. The first, Poland-China: Art and Cultural Heritage edited by Marcin Jacoby, Chen Shujun and the Scientific Committee composed of Pan Yaochang and Professor Jerzy Malinowski, was released in 2012 by Shanghai Jinxiu Wenzhang Publishing House. The publication includes articles discussing in detail some of the issues raised in The History of Polish Art, as well as essays devoted to Polish-Chinese artistic relations and Chinese art in Polish collections.
