On 18th and 19th October 2016 the main stage of Wuzhen Theatre Festival hosted Henrik Ibsen's Enemy of the People directed by Jan Klata.
The production of the National Stary Theatre in Kraków was presented in Wuzhen thrice – there were two shows on 19th October. It was the second Polish performance shown at this festival, after the successful staging of the intimate play by the Song of the Goat Theatre – Portraits of the Cherry Orchard directed by Grzegorz Bral in 2015. It was also the first play by Jan Klata that the Chinese theatre fans were able to watch. Enemy of the People is a story about an individual's struggle against the system and against society, still as relevant today as when it was written.
Jan Klata is one of the major figures of Polish theatre and another great name, after Krystian Lupa, Grzegorz Jarzyna and Krzysztof Warlikowski, introduced to the Chinese audience in 2016. Immediately after staging his Enemy of the People in Wuzhen, Klata’s another show – King Lear was presented at the Beijing People's Art Theatre.
Wuzhen Theatre Festival is an event aspiring to become the Chinese Avignon. The festival, taking place in a picturesque old town of Wuzhen close to Shanghai, has been growing in size and prestige, each year drawing more and more theatre fans and experts not only from China, but also from over the world.
