Zbigniew Rybczyński's experimental animated film Tango was shown at the 9th Yebisu International Festival for Art & Alternative Visions in Tokyo. Rybczyński was yet another Polish artist featured at the festival, after Piotr Bosacki and Paweł Althamer who had participated in the previous editions of the event.
Tango is Zbigniew Rybczyński's greatest achievement for which in 1983 he was awarded the American Film Academy Oscar for the Best Short Feature Cartoon. The success of the film is based on its ambiguity, the surprising game of time and space. Tango has been interpreted as an attempt to show 'the memory of space' or human alienation in modern society, or criticism of repeatability and banality of human life. Inviting Rybczyński to participate in the 9th Yebisu International Festival was related to the respect the artist enjoys in Asia, where he is regarded as one of the most important new media artists.
The Yebisu International Festival for Art & Alternative Visions is one of the most recognized and acclaimed by critics and audiences events dedicated to contemporary art in Japan.
The 2017 edition, titled Multiple Future, focused on a variety of motives related to the new global information technologies and their impact both on society and on individuals.
Yebisu Festival is organised by the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum (TOP Museum) and in 2017 it was hosted in the Museum’s freshly renovated main venue located in the prestigious Yebisu Garden Place. It is an international festival dedicated to new media art and film, with the programme including not only exhibitions and screenings of artistic films, but also a variety of accompanying events, lectures and meetings with the audience, which attract large numbers of young viewers. The regular presence of Polish artists at the YIFAAV is the result of a cooperation agreement signed between the TOP Museum and the Adam Mickiewicz Institute. The project is planned to culminate in an extensive exhibition of Polish contemporary art to be held in 2019 as part of celebrations of the 100th anniversary of establishing diplomatic relations between Poland and Japan.
